A Letter to Lydia

Dear Lydia,

Today is the big day that we and so many people back at home have been anticipating: your family day, your 'gotcha day' as some call it.  Many will say you are so lucky and that what we are doing for you is amazing-- but the reality is that today is going to be very hard for you.  It will not feel lucky or amazing to you at all; it will likely feel scary, uncertain and unknown to your tender heart.  We are praying with all that we have that the Lord would comfort you and bring you peace as you make this huge transition.  We are praying that He would give us a supernatural ability to anticipate your needs and bring you comfort.  We are praying that when you look into our unfamiliar eyes you will see love and feel safe.  There is nothing amazing or special about us on our own-- but with God's help we feel equipped and called to be your parents.

We have fought hard to get to this day, to make you our own, to seek out the very best for you.  We are honored to be a part of the story God is writing with your life and to see Him bring beauty from ashes.  We are praying that through adoption, you will have the opportunity to experience a forever family, to lead a healthy life with excellent medical care, and to know the love of Jesus Christ in your life.  We are not naive to the fact that your adoption is borne from loss; we will never minimize all that you have given up to join our family.  We hope that how we parent you will honor your beginnings and in some way honor your birth parents and the life we know they want you to have.

You are precious to us and we cannot wait to make you our daughter forever.  Without knowing you, we love you.  Without doing anything for us, we long to be in relationship with you and to weave your life into our family.  What an honor that God would see us fit to participate in this process and to bring a daughter from the other side of the world into our hearts and homes!

We pray that from this day forward, you will never know what it means to have unmet needs- whether they be physical, emotional, or medical.  We promise to give you our very best and to love you forever, no matter what.

We love you with all our hearts and are thankful today is the day you become our daughter.

Love,
Mommy and Daddy
